Best Fiction Writing Courses Online: How to Write a Great Novel
I’ll earn a commission if you purchase through the links on this page. Read more here.
Hello there fellow writer! Or maybe you’re not a writer, and you’re here looking for the perfect gift for the writer in your life. Either way, you’ve come to the right place to find great fiction writing courses online. I’ve taken every single one of the writing courses below, so these are my honest + real opinions about them.
I’ve been writing stories since I was fourteen (I’m in my twenties now), so I’ve come across a decent amount of great writing advice—and, sadly, some bad writing advice. I took a novel writing course in high school that changed how I write books, and I honestly think that buying a writing course can be beneficial for aspiring writers OR for seasoned writers. Why? Because there will always be someone who writes better than you, or someone who knows the publishing system better than you. And humbling yourself to learn from them can transform how you approach writing.
Are you ready to see what my favorite writing courses are? Let’s dive in! But first . . .
An Important Note
I list the prices for the writing courses within this post. A lot of them look really expensive, but never fear! There are a TON of sales where you can catch these courses for under $15. I try to update this post whenever there are sales going on, but I’m a busy gal. So make sure you click through to the course to see what the current price is!
Best Creative Writing Courses Online:
Best Plot Twist - Write Stories With a Twist
Do you want to write a story—either a novel or a shorter piece—that will surprise your readers? If so, it’s time for you to become an expert in plot twists. Jane Bettany dissects the different types of plot twists with examples and exercises to help you along the way. Grab this course if you want to amaze your readers (without leaving them feeling betrayed)!
Price: $94.99 (check price)
My Thoughts: Jane Bettany walks you step-by-step through creating a clever idea, building your twist, and then sowing clues (aka foreshadowing) throughout your story to intrigue your reader. It’s a course directed toward short story writers, but everything fits for novel writing as well. I learned a lot about writing “twist stories,” and I’d say it’s worth it for anyone who wants to do the same.
Best Story Idea Development - Develop Blockbuster Story Ideas that Sell!
Do you want to make your story EXPLODE? There are certain stories—Harry Potter, Hunger Games, LOTR, Game of Thrones—that people get obsessed over. Why? What makes them so special? Something called a “high-concept” idea. Learn what that is—and how to develop your own binge-worthy story—in this course.
Price: $59.99 (check price)
My Thoughts: I’ve been writing fiction for years, and this helped me pinpoint some issues with my own story ideas. On top of that, this writing course also showed me some great ways to come up with A+ story ideas. So if you’re struggling with coming up with a unique story idea, I’d pick up this course. If you’re looking for a good outlining course, though, there’s a better one for that below.
Best Fantasy World Building - Writing Great Fantasy: World Building Workshop
If your novel was read by a couple LOTR geeks, would they tear your story world to shreds? There’s nothing worse than knowing your story world needs some serious development. And if you can see the flaws, your readers will too. So pick up this course to create a “believable and compelling world” that your readers will want to get lost in.
Price: $199.99 (check price)
My Thoughts: As a fantasy writer, I fell in love with this course. Not only does Jason Link go deep into mapping out your story world, but he also takes you through creating your world’s complete history, fantastical creatures, and societies and governments. Note: This course is definitely aimed toward those writing other worlds in a Medieval-type setting. But I’m an urban fantasy writer, and it was still helpful.
Best Reader Engagement - Punch Them In The Gut: Writing Fiction with Emotional Impact
Maximize your novel’s power by learning how to suck your reader into your story. The trick? Emotion. It’s the best way to get your reader attached to your book, and you’ve only got one shot. So learn about the key ingredients that will keep your reader saying, “Just one more chapter!” over and over again. Better yet, get them to tell their friends about your book.
Price: $109.99 (check price)
My Thoughts: This course goes into a lot of science and the reasons behind why our brains need stories. It’s a great resource, but it takes a while to get to the “how to” part of the course. However, you can skip ahead if you don’t have a lot of time, and the explanations will still be there if you want them later.
Best Story Structure (Outlining) - Write a Bestselling Novel in 15 Steps
When you sit down to write your novel, do you feel lost? You know there’s a certain structure you should be following so your book has good pacing. But you can’t seem to wrap your head around how to do that. Well, in this course, Jessica Brody takes you step-by-step through structuring your novel and setting it up for success.
Price: $99.99 (check price)
My Thoughts: As someone who struggles with outlining, I found this course super helpful. It took me back to the basics of what makes a story great. Jessica created this course in an easy-to-follow way, and I recommend it to anyone who needs help outlining or redoing their manuscript.
